Travel Insurance
What is travel insurance?
Travel insurance covers medical expenses and financial losses while travelling,
such as loss of luggage, non-refundable pre-payments, trip cancellation fees,
loss incurred as a result of bankruptcy of tour provider, theft of or damage
to personal possessions including money, travel documents and passports, accidental
death, and emergency evacuation/repatriation.
There are different types
of travel insurance, such as business travel, leisure travel and adventure travel,
each of which covers certain activities, conditions and countries. You are strongly
advised to insure yourself against any possible risk and ensure that you are
in possession of valid travel insurance for the entire duration of your tour,
and that your insurance policy covers personal accidents, medical expenses and
repatriation costs.
Do I have to have travel insurance?
If the unexpected takes place, the cost of medical expenses, evacuation and
repatriation can mount to tens of thousands. Embassies usually assist with advice,
contacts and transfer of funds, but will not pay the costs of any medical care
or repatriation; and many of the covers listed are not usually covered by credit
card accident covers or by private health covers. It is important therefore to
have a comprehensive travel insurance while travelling in Libya or in any other
country. As stated by the FCO, "many people deeply regret not taking
out travel insurance".
Travel insurance can usually be arranged
with travel and medical insurance providers to cover exactly the duration of
your trip or holiday for a very small amount of money -- usually starting from
around £20. Insured travellers need to confirm with their insurance providers
prior to departure the exact kind of conditions covered and whether payment will
be made by the insurer as and when needed or after returning to country of
origin. It would be pointless finding out later that you need to pay for the
emergency first, then claim the refund afterwards!

What does the standard cover usually excludes
There are certain conditions that are not covered by the standard insurance.
For example, going for an adventure skiing, quad biking or scuba-diving requires
different insurance to cover the risks involved. Some insurance policies exclude
certain countries or some regions of some countries, and therefore it is your
sole responsibility to ensure the countries and regions you intend to visit are
included in your plan. The cost of the optional covers varies from one provider
to another. More than half of travel insurance policies cover loss or damage
resulting from terrorism. The following are the most common exclusions:
- Loss or damaged resulting from war or act of war, riot, insurrection, intentionally
self-inflicted Injury, suicide, pregnancy or childbirth.
- Loss or damage resulting from mental or psychological disorders, detention,
confiscation, unlawful acts, narcotics or alcohol.
- Loss or damage resulting from high risk activities not included in the policy.
- Loss or damage resulting from pre-existing medical conditions.
