Please see our popular guide to Libyan food for a brief summary of Libyan cuisine:
https://www.temehu.com/Libyan-food.htm
Libyan restaurants serve a wide variety of food dishes, including Libyan traditional food like couscous, seafood and grilled meats, international dishes such as steak and mushroom soups, and Middle-Eastern foods like pita bread served with hummus & falafel. Most visitors and travel guides do not recommend eating fresh salads and raw food in foreign countries, but we do get quite a number of European visitors who, like Libyans, eat anything. People who eat anything anywhere tend to have stronger and tougher immune system. Recent local statistical reports state that there are now 1055 restaurants and cafes, employing 10,000 people, 70% of which are Libyans. These were categorised from "Excellent" to "3-stars" restaurants and cafes.
Prices
Prices of sandwiches and meals in Libyan cafes and restaurants vary considerably from place to place. Cheap meals in public restaurants start from about 5 lyd a meal; while in mid range restaurants you should expect to pay between 15 and 20 lyd a meal. However, in top of the range restaurants the price is usually varies from 30 to 70 lyd.
Pizzas: between 3 and 10 lyd.
Sandwiches: start from 0.50 lyd to 4 lyd a sandwich.
Soft drinks: from 0.50 lyd to 3 lyd.
Coffee & tea: between 0.50 to 2 lyd.
Because of this large variation in prices we prefer it if our visitors choose to pay for their food and meals as they go. This allows visitors the freedom to choose where, what and when to eat.

This fish restaurant allows you to select the fish you like then have it cooked especially for you. The price range reflects the type of fish chosen. The prices of fresh fish in Libya range from 1 dinar per a kilo for fresh sardines, to about 40 Libyan Dinars for a kilo of the local algambary; while a lobster will cost you around 25 Libyan Dinars. When you add the restaurant fees for cooking the fish and other costs, then the advertised prices would not seem that high after all.
