There are two faculties of antiquities and tourism in Libya: one in Khums,
near Leptis Magna, and a new one established in 2016 in Tobruk.
1 - Khums (الخمس)
University of Elmergib (جامعة المرقب)
Faculty of Antiquities & Tourism (كلية الآثار والسياحة)
Established: 2007
Dean of Faculty: Dr. Muhammed Ali Housein Aldrawi (د.
محمد علي حسين الدراوي)
Website: http://www.elmergib.edu.ly
The Khums Faculty of Antiquities & Tourism is part of
Elmergib University. The faculty was initially founded by
Gaddafi's government in 2007 (according to Decree 535 of
2007). The decree was activated in 2011. The college
is regarded the first of its kind not only in Libya but in
the whole of North Africa when it was part of the Literature
Faculty at Naser University in 1990 (now Elmergib University).
The website of the university
says one of the goals of the faculty is the strengthening
of national identity and enforcing the ties between
society and its history and heritage [3]; and yet
not a single mention of the word Berber or Tamazight is found
in its website.

The University of Tobruk has revealed that it will create
a faculty of tourism. The announcement came via
the university's facebook page [1] on the 22nd of June 2016.
The decision was made by the interim prime minister's office
in January 2016.
The building of the current Education College will be used
as the headquarters of the Tourism College. After the planed
refurbishment the building will be ready for the educational
year 2016/2017.
The dean of the new faculty, Mr. Belaid Emrabeth, was reported
to have said that the number of targeted students for admission
to the college will be around 100 students, and that places
will be allocated according to the acceptance criteria.
Departments
الدراسات السياحية - Tourism Studies
الإرشاد السياحي - Tourism Guidance
إدارة الفنادق - Hotel Management
الموروث الثقافي - Cultural Heritage
الآثار الكلاسيكية - Classical Antiquities
الآثار الإسلامية - Islamic Monuments
Berber Departments (?)
The faculty does not yet include any departments for Berber
heritage, such as the study of Saharan prehistoric art and
Berber antiquities (Ghadames,Nalut,
Qasr
Alhaj, Germa,
Slontha,
Ghirza,
Haua
Fteah, Acacus,
etc, etc). Let us hope the administrators would break
away from Gaddafi's attitude towards the native heritage
of Libya and include a Berber department to boost the awareness
of Libya's prehistoric heritage and grant the natives
the recognition denied to them for so long. The creation
of a department for eco
tourism, responsible
travel and the preservation of our environment would
also be beneficial.
